I love snacking … chips, mixed nuts, party mixes, Doritos–anything salty and savoury! But I needed to find a more responsible way to snack. So I decided to break up 💔 from store-bought snacks and make my own.
I looked for various homemade snack recipes and found several popular Nuts & Bolts recipes from the internet. But most of them still used a high amount of fat (oil or butter) and sodium. So if you know anything about me, I started modifying the recipe into a healthier version that cut down on the fat and salt. This recipe has now become our staple snack at home and I prefer to make it extra sweet 🍯 and spicy 🌶️ for us.
The recipe below is only slightly spicy, but please see Tip section for how I made mine extra spicy, sweet, and garlicky. Also, you can currently buy a few different flavours of Goldfish snacks including a pretzel version. I LOVE Goldfish 🐠, so naturally I used all of them in the recipe.

Ingredients
Note: You will only need 1 box of each cereal, which allows you to make this recipe 3x.
- 1/2 cup pretzel Goldfish
- 1/2 cup rainbow Goldfish
- 1/2 cup cheddar Goldfish
- 1 cup Cheerios cereal
- 1 cup Shreddies cereal
- 1 cup Honey Nut Chex cereal
- 1 cup Chex Rice cereal
- 1 cup Crispix cereal
- 3 tablespoons butter (melted)
- 1/2 tsp celery salt
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp chilli flakes
- 1.5 tsp cayenne pepper powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Make the seasoning base by combining all the dry ingredients with melted butter.
- Drizzle the seasoning base onto the cereal and mix thoroughly until evenly coated.
- Bake at 200F for 2 hours, mixing every 30 minutes to prevent burning.
Tip: Flavour Variations
The recipe above is a good starting point for a savoury Nuts & Bolts snack. But I like my Nuts & Bolts extra spicy, sweet, and garlicky. So I take these extra steps to add more flavour to the recipe.
- Follow the above instructions and then split the seasoned cereal into two batches.
- For the 1st batch, drizzle the mixture with Sriracha and sprinkle more cayenne powder (to your preferred level of heat).
- For the 2nd batch, drizzle the mixture with honey and sprinkle with garlic power (to your preferred taste).
